Confirmation Hearing

Supreme Courts nominees are publicly questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee during their confirmation hearing. This is an opportunity for senators to learn more about a nominee’s experience and philosophy. In her memoir, Jackson recalls her own confirmation hearing, during which she was glad to have the support of her family, friends, and mentors as she faced challenging questions from the Committee.
District Court
In the US, a district court is part of the federal court system. District courts hear both civil and criminal cases. In Lovely One, Jackson discusses her experience working in district courts, first as law clerk to Judge Saris and later as a judge on the district court of Washington, DC.
Law Clerk
In the United States, law clerks are lawyers who support judges by helping them with case management, writing and research, and administrative work. Jackson recounts her experiences clerking for two judges before being encouraged to apply for a Supreme Court clerkship. She describes her clerkship with Justice Breyer as a demanding but invaluable experience that helped set her on the path to becoming a Supreme Court justice herself.
Liberty City
Liberty City is a neighborhood in Miami, Florida. Both of Jackson’s parents lived in Liberty City as children during the 1940s, when it was considered a Black middle-class neighborhood segregated from the neighboring white community by a concrete wall. Jackson notes that while this part of Miami is now an impoverished area, during her parents’ childhood, it was home to a thriving Black community, and her parents enjoyed living there.
Supreme Court Justice
A Supreme Court justice is a judge who serves on the United States Supreme Court. The Court consists of nine justices—one chief justice and eight associate justices—who decide important cases from across the country. In her memoir, Jackson emphasizes the prestigious nature of this job and its immense responsibility. Jackson notes that historically, women and Black Americans have been sorely underrepresented on the Supreme Court, making her new position as a justice a significant step forward in terms of representation.
