The next day of the Harvest Festival, Dahlia gets her family to help play a prank on Julian to get back at him for winning the competition. Julian begins working on carpentry at the Founder’s house but has trouble keeping up with business at the office. Dahlia offers to help him juggle some of his business, since she has extra time now that the TV show is canceled and her cast is off.

Chapter 33 Summary: “Dahlia”

Dahlia hears something when she is alone in the house and pulls Julian inside to see if he hears it. Julian jokes that it is a ghost, but Dahlia fears he might be serious and the famed ghost of Gerald is there to haunt them.

Despite Dahlia’s warnings, Julian goes upstairs to see what’s going on, and when he doesn’t answer his phone, Dahlia follows. When she enters the attic, she sees a giant spider, her worst fear, before Julian and Rafa jump out from the shadows. After Rafa leaves, Julian reminds Dahlia of the promise he made about what he would do after her cast came off, and they have sex in the attic.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Julian”

Once they leave the house, Julian invites Dahlia to have dinner with him at his house. He gives her the key for her to explore his place as he picks up food. At Julian’s house, they discuss their past and how Julian pushed her away after his father’s death, but Dahlia feels she is also at fault because she never tried to reconcile with him afterward. They also discuss how Julian feels lonely and how he eventually wants a wife but doesn’t particularly want children.

She also discovers that Julian has been reading a book on the town’s history and has discovered that Gerald helped found the town with a brother and his sister Wisteria. He also learned that Francesca was the mayor’s daughter and that Gerald’s family was forced to move from their hometown when Wisteria was caught in a scandal.

Chapter 37 Summary: “Dahlia”

Josefina arrives at Julian’s house and immediately knows what has been going on between her son and Dahlia. Though Julian tries to swear her to secrecy, Josefina reveals that she has already told Rosa. When Dahlia wakes up the next morning, her mother talks to her about the relationship but says she is not worried about Julian hurting her, because she knows he would rather hurt himself first.

Lily finds Dahlia and shows her the video Rafa took of his and Julian’s prank, which has been shared with both of their families. The sisters begin to scheme about another prank they can pull on Julian, alluding to Lily’s friendship with a police officer.

They will pay her twice as much as her last show; however, the new show would require Dahlia to move back to California and start pre-production within the month. Julian overhears the phone call, and his immediate coldness makes Dahlia feel he is already pulling away from their relationship.

Chapters 29-41 Analysis

In this section of the novel, Julian and Dahlia finally begin to open up to one another and admit to truths about their relationship, including their secrets and regrets regarding The Effects of Grief and Depression on Relationships.

When Dahlia opens up to Julian about her fertility troubles, another barrier in their relationship is broken down. Not only is this moment significant to Dahlia as it gets the weight of the confession off her chest, it also shows a new level of openness and trust in their relationship, which only builds from there. After Dahlia’s confession, Julian feels he trusts her enough to share things about himself in turn, such as when he lets her snoop around his house before he gets there. Ultimately, the smaller ways the two open up to one another lead to bigger truths about their relationship, letting Julian finally admit that he is falling for Dahlia and wants her to have a real relationship with him in Lake Wisteria.

The events of Chapter 34 are particularly significant for Dahlia and Julian’s relationship, as here they learn how the other truly felt when Julian returned to Lake Wisteria after his father’s death, pushing Dahlia away and ruining their friendship. Both begin to see the years between that moment and the present in a new light, understanding why the other was so hurt by their own actions. Similarly, in Chapter 36, when Dahlia sees that Julian has decorated his bedroom entirely with pieces from her collections, she understands that he was always rooting for her, even when he seemed to despise her. As they begin to rewrite the past, Dahlia and Julian can start to see a future for their relationship.

Against the backdrop of their growing trust and openness, Julian and Dahlia also continue to tentatively navigate The Benefits of Second Chances. Having known each other their whole lives, both Dahlia and Julian have preconceived notions about the other that affect their relationship. The more they learn about one another, the more they have to factor in these new ideas to those they held in the past. For example, Dahlia is nervous to tell her mother about her relationship with Julian, especially as she knows the history between the two of them. Dahlia is then surprised when Rosa speaks positively about Julian and has already noticed how he feels about Dahlia, which challenges her earlier view of him.

Their relationship is continually in flux, especially given the feelings Julian and Dahlia keep hidden from each other. Thinking they are alone, Dahlia calls Julian’s name when she is afraid in the attic, showing her care and concern for him that she wouldn’t show in front of others. Thanksgiving is particularly awkward for the pair as they wonder if they must pretend to hate one another, as that is what their families expect of them. In a place where their relationship is known well, Julian and Dahlia have an especially hard time changing because of their former patterns.

The challenging of former patterns is also in part why Dahlia is so shocked when Julian asks her to stay in Chapter 39: Though they promised one another their relationship would be casual, it quickly turns into something more serious, particularly due to their forced proximity. Dahlia wonders about the real nature of their relationship as Julian helps her make Thanksgiving dinner: “I’m not sure what the standard is regarding casual relationships, but I have a strange suspicion that Julian’s insistence on having dinner together and cuddling for an hour after sex isn’t it” (327). With their rapidly changing relationship and feelings about one another, Julian and Dahlia are often left trying to catch up on where their relationship is headed.

The idea of the past is especially important in Love Redesigned, yet in these chapters, both begin to rewrite their past as they learn new things about each other. Dahlia is confused when Julian brings their obvious sexual attraction to her attention, thinking it is something only she felt and wondering how it has made him think of her these past years. Both are still competitive with one another as they were in the past, yet their silly pranks lack the bitterness of their youth. They start to view their pranks less as a way to outdo each other and more as a way to have fun together.
