Long-Answer Response

1. Answers here can vary. Students should think about the stories that Frank has told in this book and why he might try to present himself in a positive light. After all, this is how Frank was able to gain social capital throughout all of his escapades. People believed in his confidence, and so why wouldn’t readers? On the other hand, this is ultimately a story of his downfall; he is now able to come clean about his story because he has been caught. (Chapters 1-10)

2. Answers here might include some of the following points: Frank comes from a troubled home, and this is, in fact, used as a justification for his behavior in France. From a young age, he dealt with his father’s desires to win his mother back, which is where he learned many of the skills he would later use as a con man. He also more specifically retains connections to his family by settling in Montpellier. Students may also discuss how Frank has isolated himself from the world and that he only has short relationships and that, when he tried to ground himself in a real one with Rosalie, she rejected who he truly was. (Chapters 1-10)
